Philosophy of Care 

Ashgate House aims to provide service users with a secure, relaxed and homely environment in which their care, safety, wellbeing and comfort are of prime importance. 
 
Staff will strive to respectfully preserve and maintain the dignity, individuality and privacy of all service users within a safe, warm, caring and homely environment and in so doing, will be sensitive to service users ever changing abilities and expectations. Staff will be aware of and provide for individuals’ mental and physical wellbeing, cultural, psychological, spiritual, emotional and social needs whilst fostering relationships which provide people with the confidence to discuss concerns or make complaints in the knowledge that their views will be taken seriously and acted upon. People will be encouraged to participate in the development and review of their individual Risk Assessments and Care Plans, attend meetings about them and as far as is reasonably practicable, be involved in changes to the service provision, policy and practice. 
 
Service users will be provided with programmes of activity and social interaction which is designed to encourage and promote mental stimulation, self esteem and fulfilment recognising the core values of care which are fundamental to the philosophy of our Home:-

Privacy 

The Home will preserve every service user’s right to privacy by:- 
 
Respecting and keeping confidential all information about them. 
Respecting individual’s preference to be alone and undisturbed. 
Discussing an individual’s personal issues with appropriate others, in private and without violating confidentiality. 
Ensuring individual’s can receive visitors and make and receive telephone calls in private. 
Discuss aspects of their care (care planning) in private. 
Requesting to enter a person’s bedroom and waiting for permission to do so. 
 
 

Dignity 

The Home will maintain the dignity of each person by:- 
 
Address each individual as they prefer to be addressed. 
Ensuring all care and support is provided in a dignified manner. 
Promoting autonomy by empowering people to make choices and decisions about their lives. 
Developing a good rapport with all individuals and treat them with respect at all times. 
Carrying out all care activities in a professional manner. 
 

Independence 

The Home will encourage and support people to maintain their independence by:- 
 
Allowing service users to take calculated risks. 
Supporting people to make their own decisions and think and act for themselves (where capacity allows). 
Encouraging and assisting people to carry out reasonable tasks and activity independently. 

Choice 

The Home will encourage and assist people to make choices by:- 
 
Within all aspects of daily living, giving individual’s the opportunity to select for themselves from a range of alternative options. 
Being aware of each individuals cognitive and communication ability and providing methods/equipment to enable effective understanding and communication. 

Rights 

The Home will assist each person maintain their rights by:- 
 
Promoting equality, autonomy, safety and confidentiality. 
Encouraging freedom of expression, participation and decision making. 
Ensuring the right of access to services and benefits. 
Respecting the views of people and way they wish to live their lives. 

Fulfilment 

The Home will support people to lead a fulfilling life by:- 
 
Supporting individual’s to realise their personal goals. 
Creating opportunity for people to maintain relationships with family and friends.
